λ؟:Department chairs report to the CMO for all professional and medical administrative activities within their departments, particularly for the quality of patient care given by department physicians and for the performance of any patient care evaluations and monitoring functions that the quality committee delegates to their departments. Department chair shall: ? Submit written reports to the MAB concerning the findings of the department's patient care evaluation and monitoring activities (e.g., Peer Review cases) and any resulting actions; ? Make recommendations for maintaining and improving the quality of care provided in the department and the hospital, and any other matters the MAB considers appropriate for reports; ? Develop and implement departmental programs, in cooperation with the CMO and other committees as assigned by the CMO for: 1. Evaluation of patient care, 2. Growth of the department, 3. Increasing complexity and advancing the level of medical care provided by the department, 4. Ongoing monitoring of clinical practice, 5. Credentials and privileges review, 6. Medical education, and 7. Utilization review; ? As a member of the MAB, provide input on medical policies of the hospital, and make specific recommendations regarding her or his own department; ? Continuously review the performance of all physicians with clinical privileges and specified services in the department, and regularly report the findings of such reviews to CMO, the MAB, and the quality improvement committee; ? Transmit recommendations concerning clinical privileges, specified services, or corrective action with respect to physicians in the department to the MAB and the CMO; ? Appoint and designate chairs for any intradepartmental committees that are necessary for conducting department functions; ? Enforce medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies within the department, and initiate investigations of clinical performance or order consultations, when necessary; ? Implement any actions taken by the MAB and/or the board within the department; ? Participate in every phase of administration in the department, such as cooperating with nursing services and administration in matters affecting patient care, including personnel, supplies, special regulations, standing orders, and techniques; ? Assist in the preparation of quarterly reports pertaining to the department, including budgetary planning reports, as required by the MAB, the General Manager of the hospital, or the board;? Act as the lead (with assistance of the CMO and the Human Resources department) in medical staff recruiting;? Appoint an assistant department chair, if necessary, with the concurrence of the CMO; and perform any other duties as may be requested by the CMO, the MAB, or the Governing Body. Y:Department chair must be a full member of the medical staff as defined in the Medical Staff Bylaws. Preference is given to those candidates who also have a working knowledge of management techniques and/or have prior successful service within the medical staff structure for example, as chair of a medical staff committee, member-at-large of the MAB or medical staff representative to a hospital committee.?
